Personalised instructor-guided virtual reality training

Instructor-guided virtual reality training – stage two of HYDAC’s mixed reality program – sees a student accessing personalised, one-on-one training with an instructor.

Instructor-guided virtual reality training is ideal for students who want to delve deeper into hydraulic training, HYDAC Senior Marketing Specialist Eddie Alves says.

“This is because an instructor is at hand to guide training through the basics to advanced system troubleshooting and diagnostics.”


Instructor-guided training modus operandi

The instructor wears an Oculus Quest 2 headset as does the student in their respective locations to connect in real-time in a virtual reality (VR) training environment.

Exploded product views, detailed schematics, operational guides, pop-up videos, and safety instructions can be used by the student to consolidate learning.

“The student is immersed in a VR training room featuring videos and a panel containing schematics, among other technologies and tools, to reinforce learning,” Mr Alves points out.

“Here the instructor can select relevant student learning subject matter and set up triggers to ensure learning has taken place.

“Examples could be a student having to identify an equipment leak or an accumulator problem, as examples.”

Much of the value in this type of engaging and interactive learning lies in the instructor being able to determine whether information is being retained, adaptability of the curriculum according to requirement, and an environment free of distraction in terms of email and social media etc.

As to navigation, simulated gestures are used to manipulate a VR environment such as teleporting to different areas of a virtual training room. 

“To better understand a piece of equipment or product the learner could choose to see it in exploded view or watch a video on it, among other options such as scrutinising a panel listing subcomponents.

“All this functionality assists in promoting in-depth learning and competency as the learner can truly understand how equipment is put together and operates.”

The instructor also has tools at hand such as a whiteboard to take notes and convey messages to a student.

“And students can create avatars to represent themselves while training – makes it that much more fun, creative and personalised,” Mr Alves comments.


Benefits of instructor-guided virtual reality training

The main benefit of instructor-guided training is that it’s customised to a student’s specific learning requirements, Mr Alves underscores.

He adds that of significance is that it also covers safety, risks, and procedure, including safe isolation, lock-out, and tagging.

“This is important as it prevents students from tampering with dangerous equipment when they haven’t gained the necessary skills and expertise to do so,” Mr Alves comments.

“The instructor also assesses students on a general level to ensure they have the required knowledge and proficiency to continue with their learning.”
